Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by Veronica N — 24 Jul 2016
The beginning of the Disney Renaissance, a rebirth of classic Disney animation. The music and animation are well remembered and stand the test of time. However, the biggest thing I found myself thinking was that this was a "nothing film" when it comes to the plot.
Nothing happens, there is a lesson to be learned, but no one ever does. I've seen feminist critiques of this movie that it's bad and sets up consequences and ideals without exploring them or having to suffer in order to get or not get your reward. I have to say, I'm in complete agreement. Ariel sees, she wants, she gets, end of story. King Trident goes through more character growth than his own daughter, whom this movie is focused around.
But it's got a catchy tune, so I guess that's nice.
