Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by Tyler R — 24 Feb 2016
The days of classic Disney are over. No more hand drawn animation, which is a shame because it still holds up to this day. Take The Little Mermaid for example. The film follows a mermaid who falls in love with a human.
Pretty simple, right? Of course it is, but Disney thrived on simplicity, because they cared about the characters. We feel for Ariel and and her father and both of their arguments. We get a comic relief that isn't overbearing.
And we get a villain that isn't trying to rewrite themselves and is evil just because they can be. All of these simple factors come together with nice, innocent writing and characterizations to deliver what is already a classic.
