Review of The Little Hours (2017) by Daniel S — 09 Dec 2018
There's a moment at the beginning of this film, which to that point had seemed like a standard historical film about nuns, where those nuns vehemently tell someone to go fuck himself. It's a big shock, it's hilarious, and it sets the tone for a brilliantly subversive, hilariously profane film starring a host of very funny people.
Unfortunately, that film only comes through in flashes. The rest of the time is spent telling what seems to be a serious-ish story, which almost entirely squanders the comedic potential of this dynamite cast (Brie, Plaza, Micucci, Reilly, Offerman, Pally, Armisen).
Also, there's a lot of Dave Franco in this, who seems to fit the brief of someone you hire if you want James Franco but you don't have the money and you don't mind if he's not very good because maybe James Franco will come to set and you can befriend him and make him be in your next film for mates' rates.
