Review of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1979) by Venus W — 23 Dec 2007
Animated adaption of the CS Lewis book by the "Charlie Brown" people. The animation is stylised and cartoonish and may look crude to some, but has a fairly unique aesthetic. The incidental score is very striking in places, particularly during the slaying of Aslan (a particularly horrific scene for a children's cartoon).
Be warned, there are two versions available - one with British voice artistes including Sheila Hancock as the White Queen, and an inferior version with American actors. I have a certain fondness for this version as it was one of the first home videos I owned.
The BBC live action adaption is marginally stronger, but I consider both stronger in atmosphere than the recent live-action-and-CGI Hollywood version with Tilda Swinton.
