Review of The Lion King (2019) by Stolow — 15 Aug 2019
I absolutely despise this abomination of a "film". It just doesn't seem to try anything or original in the slightest, and just seems to be copying the original beat for beat. Before I completely beat the ever-loving crap out of this film, I just want to say, if you enjoy this film; that's fine by me. Anyway, the realistic characters are a pleasant to your eyes. However, that is the problem. The characters seem a lot less expressive and emotive. If you look at the original Scar, then you see his whole demeanour and callous regard. The new one looks like an ordinary lion with a faint scar around his eye.
The film painfully mirrors the original film as well. To create a re-telling of an already originating story, you need to stick the source material while implementing your own ideas into the mix. An example would be, Mowgli (directed by Andy Serkis). This film keeps the basic plot of the original as Mowgli needs to return to the "Man Village" or Sheer Khan will kill him. It most of the same characters but gives it a darker tone and even creates whole new plot points never seen before. The Lion King 2019 can't seem to handle new ideas or creative story-lines.
In conclusion: The movie is a watered down, simplistic, painfully mimicking cash grab that tries to devour your nostalgia.
