Review of The Lion King (2019) by Kingexpressions — 08 Aug 2019

This is seriously one of the worst Disney movies of all time. I respect the effort it takes to make it photo realistic but it does the storytelling no favors at all. In a word? Anemic. Look no further than the scenes of "Be Prepared" between the animated original and this one. There's no heart in the new movie and the creators are scared to bring up imagery of war and armies. The 3 minute musical number was shortened to about 1 minute and the visuals are outright BORING. The only reason it was even included is because the internet got upset about it 2 years ago when it was reported the song wasn't going to be included. They should have just stuck with that if this was their answer. The hyenas served as comic relief in the original but in this monstrosity they are just another obligation on the checkbox of things that must be done. Their idea of a "joke" is to have one sit too close to the other over and over again. That's all the humor they could muster for the hyenas in this version. Oh and of course it's 2019 so the female hyena just HAD to be known as the boss. Disney sure does love beating us over the head with this crap. Just a terrible movie, don't waste your time.

Oh also worth mentioning that the movie loves shooting scenes in awkward angles. Made for a very jarring experience at times. I'm shocked on how bad the whole thing was. Hats off to Hans Zimmer as usual.
