Review of The Lion King (2019) by Acriticalthing — 20 Jul 2019
Truly terrible. Do not waste your money.
It watches like a high school media project: like playing the Lion King soundtrack over a nature documentary. The acting is wooden and stilted. The songs are almost identical to the original with no flair or original pieces added. The dialogue is cringy - just a weaker version of the original. Even James Earl Jones sounded flat, tired and like he didn't want to be there. Beyonce did not add much.
As The Lion King was my childhood favourite, it was greatly disappointing to watch this cash grab undermine the original masterpiece. The only highlights were the baby animals, and possibly "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The only positive comment I can give it is: impressive animation. But as it will be dated in ten years, it's not enough to redeem the movie beyond a pale, wan version of the original masterpiece I grew up with.
