Review of The Lion King (2019) by Viniciussawate — 30 Jul 2019
There is a problem when we transpose this story into the animal kingdom. For this is the place of the natural, the unchanging. The cycle of naturalized life sounds backward, as do power relations. It is striking in the movie, for example, the place of submission of females in this universe, their domestic role of caring for and protecting their offspring.
Women's place is obviously not the same in the world of nature and culture. This issue was already raised in the 1990s in relation to the first version. There has, however, been no substantial change in this construction for 2019.
It sounds conservative and out of season at a historical moment that seeks to question unequal gender relations.
