Review of The Lion King (1994) by Trevor R — 07 Apr 2013
The driving story of "The Lion King" is a clunky and sorta manipulative retelling of Hamlet with weirdly racist undertones. It's sad how this undercuts much of the movie's lasting impact, because everything else is pretty amazing.
The visuals are lush and awe-inspiring, many of the songs are among the best from any Disney musical, and Timon & Pumba are actually very funny (Easily two of the best animated sidekicks of all time-- great performances from Lane and Sabella).
It's epic and powerful and visually stunning, despite the problematic themes.
