Review of The Lion King (1994) by James S — 01 Jul 2014
I'm sure many of my contemporaries have fond memories of watching Disney films as children. It's always difficult to revisit them as adults, as you have to balance objectivity with nostalgia. However, I am confident that The Lion King stands the test of time.
The plot is, to quote film critic Michael Barryte, "Animal Hamlet." While I'll leave you to pick up the pieces of that mind-blowing revelation, I will add that the story is very tight, and the musical numbers are both entertaining and plot-forwarding.
The movie boasts a stellar voice cast, from James Earl Jones as Mufasa, to Rowan Atkinson as Zazu. Also on the all-star list are J. Taylor Thomas and Matthew Broderick (as Young and Old Simba, respectively), Nathan Lane (Timon), and the phenomenal Jeremy Irons (Scar).
This is my favourite Disney Animation film, and one I'm sure will be entertaining young and old alike for many years to come.
