Review of The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) by Debra D — 31 Dec 2011
Going to see this wasn't my idea, but I have to say, I really enjoyed this. I think my feelings on McConaughey have been well documented, but I will state again that its a real shame to see him churn out turd-movie after turd-movie when the guy can actually act if he sets his mind to it. This is a great example of him setting his mind to it. A very good supporting cast including the always underrated William H. Macy, and decent supporting actors like Tomei and Philippe.
What makes the film work is its smart plot and its breakneck pacing. It never slows down, and it is constantly introducing new aspects to the story. The backbone of the plot isn't super original; Free-wheeling defense attorney seemingly without conscious takes on a case that causes him to change his ways. While this has been done many times before, the film succeeds in its details and intricate story building.
Gets a little long towards the end and focuses in a bit too much on several smaller more trivial aspects of the story, but as far as legal thrillers go, this one is definitely near the top of my list.
