Review of The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) by Mary L — 24 May 2013
(8/10).
The Lincoln Lawyer is a very well done legal thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillipe, William H. Macy and Michael Pena. Though this movie didn't reach greatness, it was certainly really good. It was very well crafted and intriguing with terrific performances to boot. The plot of this movie goes like this: McConaughey stars as an attorney called Mickey Haller who works out of the back of his car. He is struggling to make a living, but he soon finds himself attached to a case that might change that all around. Basically, he is tasked with defending Ryan Phillipe, who is charged with rape and attempted murder. From there on, he gets himself entangled in webs of mystery and deceit. Soon things spin out of control and his career, his loved ones and his life may all be in danger. Now I know that kinda sounds like the set-up for a run-of-the-mill political thriller, but this one stands out from among them thanks largely in part to the terrific performances of the fantastic cast. It also benefits largely due to its unpredictability that other movies of its kind are sometimes lacking.
The main thing that stops this movie from going to the next level is that there are a few impossibilities in the script that might leave some viewers scratching their heads. Other than that, there isn't too much else that's wrong with this movie. It's a very entertaining film with unpredictable twists that don't feel too absurd, terrific performances and a great score. I would watch this movie again in a hurry.
