Review of The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) by Liam C — 10 Nov 2014

It's interesting to go back and watch this again after everything that's happened with the McConaissance and how the next few years played out after this was released... And I still haven't read the book. The Lincoln Lawyer presents a great story and a well chosen cast that is full of great performances.

The story was good, it took a little while to get going but before long things just keep getting worse for our characters in the complex plot and a very interesting and engaging story is being told. Matthew McConaughey is great in the lead and really demands the audiences attention, I was getting flashbacks of Amistad seeing him in this role. Like I said, the cast is well chosen and everyone plays their part well, even those who are in the film for a brief time, I won't name everyone else because everyone does a good job and plays their character perfectly and half this review would just be names otherwise.

However, I will mention Shea Whigham as its nice to see him in a role like this and I'd love to see him in more in a lead, he actually went to work with McCounaghey again in True Detective, he's good in anything he's in. And it's always good to see Bob Gunton in something. Only real complaint I haveis that Marisa Tomei was hardly in it, I would have liked to have seen her in the story more.

The film looked excellent, the cinematography by Lukas Ettlin is beautiful and really crisp even if sometimes it had some shaky cam in there, it fit for what it was trying to do but it would have worked without. It also had a good soundtrack that was really memorable and felt modern in the best of ways.

I remember thinking the first time I saw this that, 'what's the point?' For at least the first part because not a lot was going on but as the film went on it got me involved with its story until the end. And Matthew McConaughey says, 'alright, alright, alright' so that's another positive! Featuring fantastic performances from everyone and a very interesting story, The Lincoln Lawyer is grade A entertainment, and from what I've heard, a fantastic adaptation.
