Review of The Limey (1999) by Noam S — 18 Aug 2007
Innovatively edited modern noir revenge drama. Stamp makes the titular character a charming rogue, while Lesley Ann Warren is radiant (arguably more so than the other doe-eyed, willowy brunette in the picture); her scenes with Stamp add a genuine warmth without ever being sentimental.
The movie makes for interesting comparison with "The Grifters"; whereas Frears's film trades in nihilism and Greek tragedy, Soderbergh's movie has at its core a surprising belief in human decency, and feels almost Shakespearean in its build-up to the inevitable meeting of Wilson and his daughter's killer.
