Review of The Limey (1999) by Martin S — 30 Oct 2006
All style and no substance. The story is paper thin and the characters uniformally uninteresting. Terence Stamp is about as convincing a cockney as Don Cheadle in Ocean's 11, even though he IS actually British. As in a million other American movies starring British gangsters he spends much of the film talking in rhymning slang and then explaining what he means afterwards when they don't understand him for the 100th time. The other characters spend the movie marvelling at how British he is and doing very little else.
There are plenty of editing tricks but there isn't enough going on to make any of it very interesting. Put simply: The Limey badly wants to be Point Blank, but it isn't. I expected more of Soderbergh.
