Review of The Light Between Oceans (2016) by Kylie M — 01 Sep 2016
At two and a quarter hours it is long, but I honestly don't think anything could be cut without hurting the pacing. several plot points engage at about the right amount of time after the prior one.
vikander is superb. btw, the director did something brilliant to create the finest child performance I have ever seen. I didnt notice for a while but the child's line readings were mostly dubbed to an off-camera or face-turned child.
I dont know whether someone else voiced the lines, but the result is a fantastically believable rendering of the child's emotions throughout. and of course the film is gorgeous. I guess the relatively low score may be due to our inability to pay attention to adults dealing with difficult situations without resort to violence or super powers or both.
these adults all show, at one time or another, terrific grace under pressure.
