Review of The Light Between Oceans (2016) by Greg B — 07 Sep 2016
"The Light Between Oceans" is a period piece about a groundskeeper (Michael Fassbender) who is commissioned to watch over an island in a remote part of the Northeastern U.S. He quickly falls in love with his employer's daughter (Alicia Vikander) and moves her to the island with him.
After repeated failed attempts to procreate, Vikander is dismayed, until a baby washes ashore in a bungalow one day. The couple must weigh the moral decision of keeping it or reporting it. I thought this film reeked of Nicholas Sparks schmaltz.
The plot is underdeveloped, and there is not much to work with in the script. The film is hand-crafted sap and the characters are not able to do much with the script. Fassender and Vikander are two of our better actors, but even their clout cannot carry this uneven film.
There are several tender moments in the film, but we feel like we've seen this story a million times before -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C+.
