Review of The Light Between Oceans (2016) by Erin G — 11 Sep 2016
It's a difficult task relaying the story of an intricately detailed book into a mere 2 hours. While this movie makes a valiant effort, it falls just short of being triumphant in this. Scenes that were removed from the movie resulted in a loss of character development that was detrimental in suspending belief that the characters would make the consequential choices they did.
The cinematography provided images of sprawling landscapes and beautiful captures of human emotion. The acting was above par, but the script was lacking. The movie wasn't even close to being bad, but it lacked the empathy for the characters we should have felt or did feel if you read the book, because their motivations were lost and actions unconvincing from a lack of character development.
In this case, the book was better than the movie.
