Review of The Lifeguard (2013) by Roxanne R — 10 Nov 2013
Never judge a book by its cover and the same applies here! I noticed this was a hot selection on Netflix and decided to give it a shot and glad I did. Bravo to the writer and director Liz Garcia for making a film that probably many people especially women will identify with.
Our protagonist almost 30 years old named Leigh (Kristen Bell) is going through a rough patch in her career and love life so she decides to move back home temporarily with her parents. While back home she reunites with old friends and lands her old high school job of lifeguard.
As Leigh throws caution to the wind and becomes a kid again, several lives will be impacted along the way. This is one of those rare films that I get to enjoy from beginning to end, an insightful and eye opening ride.
No special effects, no major budget or thrills, just an ordinary film that packs a punch! One topic discussed is an affair between a 30 year old woman and a 17 year old teenage boy- the sex scenes were very open, and although its hard to grasp the "statutory rape" instance since I don't feel the teen was damaged one bit, on the contrary, I think she helped him tremendously to start a new life.
You will see what I mean if you care to watch this film which I highly recommend. Available in HD on Netflix instant streaming so go for it!
