Review of The Life of Emile Zola (1937) by Steven B — 08 Apr 2008
One of the best biopics ever made. Its structure is remarkable: it flirts initially with the conventional "highlight reel", then leans the rest of its weight into the Dreyfus Affair--choosing Zola's controversial "J'accuse" article and his subsequent trial as a means to memorialize the man.
Muni's performance is astounding; he delivers a pivotal monologue in an unbroken 5-minute shot!
