Review of The Life of David Gale (2003) by Douglas D — 01 Jul 2010
I was shocked by the small number of critics who liked this film. I'll grant that the film has some poorly written moments and dialogue, but the most important part of the film--the final 45 minutes--was inspiring. As I watched the film and thought about the rating I would give it, I noted the dated feeling that seemed a bit unintentional, I noted the moments of suspect dialogue, and I noted a few times that even Ms. Kate Winslet wasn't even at her best.
Yet as the execution drew near, so did the drama; by the time David Gale's story obtained its resolution my jaw had actually dropped. Every face of the climax is beautiful and well executed, and Alan Parker's philosophical arguments relative to the death penalty are logical and clearly explained.
If you're not interested in philosophical tales that force you to examine your views that are in favor of or against an issue, then avoid 'The Life of David Gale.' If you're interested in a decent drama that only gets better, and if you're open minded and willing to think about your views, then put this one at the top of your queue.
