Review of The Life Before Her Eyes (2007) by Eric H — 04 May 2008
This film didn't leave me with that much. The ending left me really puzzled. Don't get me wrong: I like having something to think about once a film is finished. But I'm not sure this ending was effective, and it's anyone's guess as to what it really means.
I'm sure the director wanted that, so, lest I let it feel like a personal triumph for him, I must say that I don't think the ending helped his film in any way. Rather, it made it a good deal less intelligible.
Ultimately, though the film depicts events that do actually occur in our world, the film didn't seem very true to life. No-one's reactions or behavior seemed very authentically real. Instead, it seemed like we're looking at life through a strange sort of rose-colored haze.
Though the events depicted are far from perfect, I feel like the world it ultimately portrays is a bit too perfect, and therefore, unbelievable. I couldn't sink my teeth into this film, unfortunately.
Though I do give the filmmakers credit for addressing a subject matter I rarely see touched upon in films. I hope that the next fictional film I see based on such subject matter is a more effective (or perhaps BELIEVABLE) expression.
