Review of The Life Before Her Eyes (2007) by Nathania Y — 19 Apr 2008
Is it possible to enjoy a film even if you don't understand the ending? Is it possible to enjoy the film even if you disagree with it's message? Is it possible to enjoy a film even if you recognize that it is flawed? The answers to these questions are "yes".
TLBHE is an arthouse mindfuck of a movie. It was only after I got home that I fully understood the ending. But that did not diminish it's entertainment value. If you are a fan of alternative storytelling and beautiful cinematography, this one's for you.
If you are a fan of the queen of teen angst ERW, do yourself a favor and catch the show. but if you like things spelled out with a nice bow on top, please stay home. The Post indicated that they thought the karmic payback the lead character suffers is a sign of an anti-abortion message, but I don't think that was the point of this film.
Regardless, it is an absorbing melodrama.
