Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Dann M — 15 Mar 2012
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou is a chaotic character drama that goes off in several different directions and never finds itself. The film follows the exploited of Steve Zissou, an oceanographer who treks out in search of a "Jaguar Shark" after it kills his best friend.
The ensemble cast is quite impressive and includes Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem DaFoe, and Jeff Goldblum. The problem is that they don't work as an ensemble cast: Blanchett in particular gives an especially bad performance.
The story meanders far too much and never comes together cohesively. What comedy there is works, but it's not put to much use. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou has its moments, but doesn't amount to much.
