I think the poor review above is classic Hollywood fuck up. They did it to Fight Club and they did it to Steve Zissou. The hate it at first, then years later they look back and realize just the greatness that is The Life Aquatic.
Obviously this movie is as good as it is due to the one and the only Wes Anderson. There are few writer/directors like him (Quentin Tarantino has seen similar success in his movie but they are drastically different).
And the one thing you can always count on in a Wes Anderson film? An amazing cast. And I don't just mean Bill Murray (though he alone can drastically improve any movie). As great as Bill and Owen and Jeff Goldblum are though, my favorite is Willem Dafoe.
That man is frickin hilarious in this movie. I mean they all are, but he specifically stands out to me. This is one of those weird movies that just everybody needs to see in my mind. Arguably my favorite Wes Anderson film, and one of my favorite comedies, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is a movie that everyone should see.
