Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Melissa E — 18 Sep 2012
Finally got around to seeing this. I've always stayed away from Wes Anderson films as I am allergic to smug. But this film managed to give selfish and empty characters a certain uncharacteristic warmth and heart.
Now, how he went about giving the characters their push into personal growth was a bit contrived and convenient, but overall there were some really great moments dealing with family, fatherhood, and adult life.
There was a moment superbly acted by Bill Murray that had such a raw honesty and bite that I couldn't help but be won over. A moment that tells you everything about Steve Zissou: Bill Murray replies to a question about why he never sought out his son, "Because I hate fathers and I never wanted to be one.
" Overall I was delightfully surprised and may give another Wes Anderson film a shot.
