Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Todd B — 20 Sep 2012
One of Wes Anderson's stronger films, 'The Life Aguatic' features Bill Murray at his awkward best in this funny, sporadic, and somewhat action-packed adventure of a man past his prime who discovers some of his secret past along the way.
TLA features an impressive cast besides Murray, including Owen Wilson (in one of his better, less crude roles), Jeff Goldblum, William Dafoe, Cate Blanchett, and the guy who played the 2nd Dumbledore.
Throughout the film, purposefully cheesy special effects mash with slapstick-style action and awkward humor to create an elixir of marine biology weirdness and an overall enjoyable ride. Anderson's style is definitely still an acquired taste, but I feel this is one of his more fun stories.
