Review of The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972) by Lou E — 11 Jul 2007
Any western I watch these days gets compared to Deadwood and pales by comparison. So this is a bit dated but it's got Paul Newman in it and it was directed by John Huston and written by John Milius - three old school Hollywood he-men, so it's got a bit of grunt to it. It's pretty left of centre and in parts it's surprisingly funny. The one reason I have this in my collection is the Bad Bob scene - hilarious!
The bear is great but the sappy, featured song is a real anomaly and a horrible miscalculation.
