Review of The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004) by Tero H — 21 Oct 2012
This was a lot of fun, and I liked it - rather than the artistic side, I liked the feeling that the film had: a genuine comedy adventure with a touch of the fantastic. A very imaginative movie, with all the elements balanced.
The acting was fine and the film proceeded without breaks, all was clear and consistent from the beginning to the end, complicated and diverse enough to keep the interest, yet not too much so to be hard to follow.
With sympathetic main cast, adventure, romance, action and humor this fantasy adventure film is sure fun.
So what are the minuses? The corny 'fairy-tale things' going on, and a tv-series feeling. I mean, come on, some of the things like the golden goose, or the sword in the stone, all mixed with mayan legends and the language of the birds, I was at first like, phew.. It is a difficult thing to master, such mixture of the slightly corny and stereotypical mixed in an original way, and only a few films that I know of have been able to do so with success (such as the 'Les Aventures Extraordinaires d Adele Blanc-Sec' by Luc Besson) Also, this felt like an episode for a fantasy series for the younger audience. Even so, I would still classify this as one of my favorite films out there. Just be ready to let yourself be a bit childish again and this movie will guarantee a fun ride.
