Review of The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004) by Bryan P — 09 Jan 2010
You can not watch "The Librarian" without thinking about Indiana Jones, but this is NOT Indiana Jones. The best part is that they know it. This is a made for TV movie, produced by TNT. And it feels the part. At times it feels like a good adventure film and other times it feels like a guilty pleasure, fantasy/adventure show that is just so bad it's good and it makes you smile.
Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) may come close to matching knowledge with Dr. Jones, but, unlike Indy, finds himself quite out of place in the wild and dealing with bad guys holding guns. However, rather than attempt to come up with a single character that could hope to rival the good doctor, the filmmakers cleverly decided to split him in two. The machete-wielding and villain-stomping is covered by Nicole Noone (Sonya Walger). The two make a perfectly matched team who both get the chance to show off their strengths.
I found the movie interesting and, most importantly, entertaining. I was never bored and I was pleasantly surprised. Not every movie has to be life-changing or groundbreaking, some are just fun. Judging from and A to an F, I give it a solid B. Maybe a B+. And I do enjoy a good B movie.
