Review of The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004) by Linzi H — 11 Apr 2012
*I ACTUALLY HAD A MUCH LONGER VERSION, THAT UNFORTUNATELY GOT WIPED BY THE INTERNET, FUCKS SAKE.*.
Indiana Jones is obviously the figurehead of action adventure heroes, infamous pretty much all around the world, recognizable from just a fedora and whip. Indiana Jones was a man of action, strong fists, strong words, and great bravery, being played by Harrison Ford.
And then you have Flynn Carsen. Flynn is more of a bookish character, her relies on his knowledge as opposed to his fists, having been in education until the age of 31, which makes him a very different character to most. His knowledge allows him to notice antiques with quick ease, and translate multiple languages, which isnâ(TM)t easy of course.
It is very difficult to portray a character as more cerebral then physical in an action film, a character who would use his intelligence as opposed to punching his way out. It is also difficult to easily build up a character who could supposedly be thrown into the deep end so convincingly, Flynn suddenly being told he has to protect the entire world, using just his knowledge. Thankfully, Noah Wyle is a brilliant choice, a masterstroke who perfectly epitomizes that of a witty, intelligent bookworm who is endearing and enjoyable to watch. Wyle does this perfectly.
What I also enjoyed was that the action was built around the recovery of The Spear Of Destiny, an often popular ancient weapon utilized in this sort of film. And I think a good idea they used was when trying to sell the weapon, they mention there are three parts and only one was used by Hitler. This instantly sells the weapon as extremely powerful, yet dangerous, and I was also impressed by the trials and tribulations to achieve this weapon.
Overall, I think the film is a great TV-Movie, almost cinema quality, with an impressive performance from Noah Wyle. Worth a watch.
