Review of The Libertine (2004) by Jesse B — 31 Jan 2008
I really should see this again before I rate it, but as I remember it's a fabulous film. First off, it doesn't shy away from the realities of disease, nor is England in anyway idealised. Secondly, while certain aspects are rather over-emphasised (I'm thinking of the play to Charles II with all those.
.. members on display), it gets away with it because it enhances the character of Rochester, and that's what the film is, a character study. A costume drama with a bit more grit. Austen beware, the Libertine is back.
