Review of The Libertine (2004) by Jer M — 17 Sep 2008
Dark, seedy historical drama about the second Earl of Rochester (Depp) and his obsession with sex, which leads to his falling in love with a fiery actress (Morton). Inventively shot, with murky candlelit gloom the order of the day, and Depp and Morton are both excellent as always.
In the end though, the film has little to say about its subject, except that, as the prologue states, you will not like him much, and as a consequence the film is difficult to love.
