Review of The Libertine (2004) by Aussie C — 01 Apr 2010
This movie, The Libertine, is a bare knuckles performance by Johnny Depp, period.
I'm not sure I have seen a better performance by Depp albeit, better movies perhaps.
His portrayal of John Wilmot, the debauched 2nd Earl of Rochester in 17th century England during the Restoration, is a fantasic period piece including wardrobe, cinematography and language.
Depp gives us a view of life from the Aristocrats of England in a period where anything pretty much went, that is save for disrespecting the King.
Having been to England many times and being part English myself, I have an affinity to period piece films on merry 'ol England anyways, let alone such an obnoxious piece as this.
Perhaps being too crass for a gentlemen to endure, this film can be better appreciated as a lesson in history with superb acting and dialogue than anything else, if one may.
Myself, I found it riveting and strained to hear every word uttered by these rogues out of their drunken pie holes.
Brilliant.
