Review of The Libertine (2004) by Tabitha M — 03 Apr 2010
The Libertein is a sordid tale of one man's decent into debauchery, romance and his eventual demise.
Depp's opening and closing monologues are captivating, if not the best reason to watch the film. "You will not like me" compared with the closing question of having been liked, perhaps sum up the development of his character by the end of the film.
While perhaps not a happy film experience, the film is graced with fine performances and intriguing dialogue. The characters and plot - Depp's character in particular - dare I say, will stimulate debate and conversation long after the closing scene.
