Review of The Libertine (2004) by David S — 08 Mar 2011
A brilliant idea of dirty debauchery and all things attached. The Libertine is a perfect title for this film because it revolves around a perfectly cast libertine who burns brighter than all other candles, and in doing so, dies much sooner.
Spectacular dialogue spoken by the king-pins of this style of films; Depp and Malkovich and a reasonable but not so special group of support actors/actresses. Whilst some would say the lighting and the costumes were drab and imperfect, I say I agree, and that's what makes it so beautiful.
It is made dirty, it is made dark and dank, allowing the true power of this film to shine. With the attached vulgarity and self-indulgence, the perfect tone and atmosphere is brought to life.
