Review of The Libertine (2004) by Liz — 20 Mar 2011
The Libertine was a character-effort. Johnny Depp, Rosamund Pike, John Malkovich and Samantha Morton were the points of brilliance. The story itself, the story of John Wilmot's life, was depressing and well adapted for movie-format, but it was only effective in portryaing Wilmot as a terrible human being. There was no remorse, and no sympathy avalible. The hand-cam was useful, but slightly unnerving at points-- as was the mostly candle-lighting.
Overall it was enjoyable, but mostly because of the acting. Worth a view, but not at the top of any list.
