Review of The Leopard (1963) by Steven B — 18 Sep 2007
Has all the narrative urgency of a fat cat sprawled on a sofa. However, the deceptive richness of this pic's details works with the languorous running-time to create a film of deep emotional complexity.
An unlikely Lancaster, with his lionine features sporting an unlikely trill of moustachio, is absolutely perfect as an aging Italian aristocrat. Even the restless drapes billowing amongst the prayerful in the opening sequence harbour so much meaning.
