Review of The Leopard (1963) by Thomaz N — 26 Oct 2007
After Viscontiâ??s ground-breaking Rocco and his Brothers, which dealt with the plight of southern migrants trying to start a new life in Milan in the late 1950s, he turned to an adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusaâ??s definitive Sicilian novel.
Viscontiâ??s extravagant style and attention-to-detail resulted in this sumptuous epic of Italian history and politics, one which almost bankrupted Titanus Films in the process. Lancasterâ??s portrayal of the titular prince is arguably his finest performance.
