Under the politics of Italian unification, the prince aristocrat faces the transition from old heritage values to the opportunistic perversion of the New. As a man of wit and charisma, he embraces the change honorably, even supports his niece, the symbol of aristocratic decline.
However, the acceptance and sagacity of new social norm heighten the disillusionment of "eternal" privileges, exhaust him to the core of existence.
