Review of The Leopard (1963) by Ryan S — 06 Dec 2008
You can't beat this film. You CAN'T beat it at all. How is it that Visconti's filmography has been so overlooked in the modern world? He belongs right up there with Fellini and Antonioni. A great commentary on the Italian bourgeoisie and its downfall- all leading up to that amazing third hour, as Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale engage in a transfixing ballroom dance that somehow ends up summing up what the film is all about.
One of the great Italian epics, rivaled perhaps only by "La Dolce Vita". What a gorgeous film.
