Interestingly, the political argument is an almost anti-revolutionary marxism that claims if things change too quickly, they're bound to end up the same. In that vein of sensibility, Visconti and Lancaster make Salina a tragic hero for his discretion and pragmatism--a difficult but worthwhile achievement.
