Review of The Lego Movie (2014) by Mark F — 22 Jun 2015
The movie opens with a clever jab at the mind numbing dross served up on TV and its ability to produce a society of conformed, if chirpy, puppets. At that point it looked like it was going to be a great satirical movie. Just after the halfway mark though, I was getting tired of it. It seemed to have turned into the kind of thing I thought it was protesting against. One for the ADHD generation. Loud noises! Shiny things! Look it's Batman! And now a pirate boat! And now the Millennium Falcon! And now everything is smashed up! Rainbow unicorn kitties! Aaaaah!
But the end saved it somewhat because suddenly it made sense. This is how kids play with Lego. It's about using your imagination and not letting real world barriers get in the way. And that's a good thing. So in the end it won me over. And I'm glad I stuck with it 'til the end.
