Review of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) by Brunovn00 — 07 Nov 2019
While far from being as good as the first one, The Lego Movie 2 is still a fine movie. It is like an "Incredibles 2" kind of sequel, not bad but not great. Mainly because most of the jokes were not funny. There are jokes that are reused from the first one and obviously don't feel fresh anymore. The characters feel flat and their arcs aren't as good as the previous one.Even if I don't compare this movie to the previous one is still not a great movie. I think that what really cemented the previous one as an animated masterpiece is the message, the meaning behind the movie. In this movie we don't get a message as powerful as the previous movie. There is a message, but it's weak and ultimately when it doesn't have too much to say, it ends up feeling empty. Phil Lord and Chris Miller wrote the script and honestly I was shocked, because these guys are talented, but when watching it I felt like it was written by "insert screenwriter name here" and that tried to imitate the brilliant script of the last movie.
Enough with my issues with the movie, because it had some positives: The visuals as expected look great and I feel like they pushed the visuals a little bit further, thus making the visual aspect superior to the original. It has so much style and the sets look awesome. There were some jokes that actually made me laugh for their creativity, even when 90% of the humor was either not funny, or "been there done that". That's pretty much it for the things I actually liked. In conclusion, the biggest problem is the lack of creative ideas and franchise fatigue. Pretty much the Lego Movies are starting to play it safe, recycling jokes and running gags and plot points, and it's a shame, because what started as a fresh and creative concept is starting to feel dull. While, in my opinion, this was an unnecessary sequel, I feel that the writers and director could've taken advantage of that fact and make some funny self-aware jokes about how unnecessary this movie is or something or simply just come up with creative ideas! Like I said, it feels more of an "Incredibles 2" than a "Toy Story 2", far from being bad, but there were a lot of "been there done that" moments. If the original, as great of a movie as it was, didn't get an Oscar nomination, I feel like this one has even less chance to being nominated. I will be surprised if it actually does.
