Review of The Legend of Hercules (2014) by Marischa B — 14 Jun 2014
Would be the worst movie of the year if it wasn't so gloriously ridiculous. Without getting too deep into the details, because it is absolutely unnecessary, this is a reimagining of the Greek hero, and I promise you that you haven't heard this story told this way before.
Here is what this movie is: if a Shakespeare impersonator was contracted to pen a story about a mythological figure, but then told he only had 3 hours to submit the final draft, he would scramble and put together something like The Legend of Hercules.
This is directed by infamous schlock director Renny Harlin, who would be on the same level of Uwe Boll, but he is a modicum more competent behind the camera, which at least makes his movies watchable.
He gets all of his actors to deliver some truly atrocious lines of dialogue not only with a straight face, but with conviction, which is a flabbergasting feat, all things considered. Despite itself, this story keeps moving forward, giving you one outrageous action sequence after another with loads of Zack Snyder-esque speed up/slo-mo shots and shameless 3-D usage.
Having just watched Pompeii and 300: Rise of an Empire, I can honestly tell you that I would rather watch this. You will at least get entertainment value here because it is constantly surprising you with the preposterous, which makes it the perfect movie to watch with friends over drinks, especially if the Rifftrax guys ever choose to cover this.
