Review of The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972) by Zack D — 12 May 2014
1972, actually.
After the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film footage from the late 60's Bigfoot became a popular obsession during the 70's along with other mysterious and occult phenomena.
This movie, to heighten the drama and hide the fact that it is a guy in a gorilla suit and a cheap one at that, takes the approach of a documentary film. It works in a way but mainly it is silly. I still remember one of my buddies in high school describing this movie as "this kid runs for like 10 miles, stops, then runs back the other 10 miles and it takes like 15 minutes for him to do this.".
At the time this was an effective way to market this cheap movie, pre-internet, much like Blair Witch did recently. It is still a terrible movie but a amusing case study of the early 70's.
