Review of The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) by Darryl — 10 Oct 2008
A beautifully filmed movie! It has a stellar cast, a really good plot, and some actual golf action. I really enjoy the Jack Lemmon narrative throughout the show. Matt Damon does a great job at helping us to see a man who's "hoping to forget... and to be forgotten". He has lost his way, and needs a guiding hand to get him back 'in the field' and 'on the course'.
When asked the question, "how drunk is drunk enough?" His response shows just how lost he would like to get ... "And the answer is, it's all a matter of brain cells. Brain cells? That's right. Every drink of liquor you take kills brain cells. But that don't matter, we got billions more. First, the sadness cells die, so you smile real big.
Then the quiet cells go, so you talk real loud for no reason at all. That's okay, because the stupid cells go next... so everything you say is real smart. And finally... come the memory cells. These are tough SOB's to kill".
I really enjoy this storyline, although it is a tad bit slow, but nonetheless enjoyable. Will Smith (as the Caddy) does an outstanding job at coaching along the struggling golfer and helping him find freedom from his inner demons and excessive burdens, and helps him to see that "the trick is to find your swing. You lost your swing. We got to go find it!".
All this for a mere.
Guaranteed Five dollars! Good show, it probably helps if you like golf.
