Review of The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter (2018) by Anthony B — 07 Jul 2018
This is a infuriatingly squandered opportunity. Jody Hill is one of my favorite comedic filmmakers because his work (Foot Fist Way, Observe and Report, Eastbound & Down) is both hilarious and creepy.
There is a very ballsy darkness to Hill's writing and direction that cannot be taught or mimicked, but somehow The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter manages to be cookie-cutter moviemaking at its most irritating.
Reluctantly, I am giving this one three stars solely because there is nothing significantly bad about it, but that is mainly because the film is so insignificant as a whole. The three leads performances however, while safe, never come across as phoned-in, instead it feels more like Jody Hill is the one sleepwalking.
I am not sure if he sold-out or pussed out, but let's hope the buck stops here.
