Review of The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter (2018) by Josh C — 10 Jul 2018
At first glance, this film looks like it could work. Brolin brings the drama, McBride the comedy relief and Montana Jordan seems to have enough acting chops to carry the son role. However, this movie never comes together, and is wildly erratic in its subject matter.
The comedy provided, although funny at times, just doesn't mesh well with the dramatic family story that is being told. At one point the film moves from a scene of an ex-husband making a desperate phone call to his ex-wife, whom he seems to still love, directly to McCbride showing pictures of a full-on gangbang to a 12-year old boy (Yes, that happenned).
Eric Kohn from Indiewire said it best; "There are some real missed opportunities here." The plot of an overzealous professional hunter recovering from divorce taking his disinterested son out on his first hunting trip is a pretty good premise.
In the end, it comes out looking like a Judd Apatow comedy meets The River Wild...only bad.
