Review of The Ledge (2011) by Cliff O — 29 Jul 2011
Written & directed by Mathew Chapman, great-great grandson of Charles Darwin, this film has been billed as Hollywood's first 'atheist' movie. Well it is and I'm very pleased indeed to see a major motion picture with a blatantly open atheist hero and especially one with an A-list cast to boot.
Well done Liv Tyler for getting this ship moving and kudos to Sundance for having the balls to premier it. Unfortunately, parts of the dialogue seemed a tad contrived in places and the characters cliched but I think this is simply because I'm so familiar with the subject and the arguments? Nevertheless, it's great to see this polemic played out on celluloid and full credit is given to the intellectual content and for the emotionally charged, albeit obvious, crescendo.
However, I wonder how many christian fundies will votebot this film down without seeing it or will simply fail to see the glaringly obvious and erudite points that it makes? I for one enjoyed this movie and I hope to see more openly atheistic films hitting our screens.
I'm quietly hoping this could be our 'Brokeback Mountain' moment... we'll have to wait and see? xXx.
